COLUMN: Where to take parents during graduation weekend in Bloomington

entgradweekendfolks042925

Graduation is a full-circle moment that's more than just crossing the stage — it’s a time to celebrate with the people who helped you get there. Whether it’s good grubs or a picturesque stroll, Bloomington offers plenty of family-friendly ways to turn the week into memories you’ll cherish long after the caps have fallen.

Taste the victory together at Hoosier favorites

Graduation week calls for meals that hit a little harder, the kind you’ll remember. Start with the classic Bloomington legends: grab a seat at Nick’s English Hut for a bucket of seasoned fries, dive into a cozy brunch at Runcible Spoon or split a deep-dish pizza at Mother Bear’s. Upland Brewing Company, Michael’s Uptown Cafe, Janko’s Little Zagreb, Buffalouie’s and Anyetsang’s Little Tibet are some of the spots that generations of students and families keep coming back to.

Bloomington fills up fast during graduation week, so book your tables early anywhere to save a seat. Some local spots like FARMbloomington, The Elm and Taste of India are known to offer graduation-week special menus.

All booked out? Don’t worry, you can still walk right into student-treasured spots like B-Town Gyros, Dat's Cajun Creole, The Tap, Taste of India, Yogi's, and Social Cantina without a reservation.

Strike a pose at iconic places on campus

You’ve put in the work, and now it’s time to snap some great photos with your biggest supporters by your side. IU's campus is one of the most scenic in the country, and it’s full of perfect spots to mark your graduation moment.

The Sample Gates are the unofficial start and finish line for every Hoosier. With their limestone archway and view of Kirkwood, they make an essential photo stop. A short walk away, you’ll find Dunn Meadow, a wide green lawn where graduates love to gather with families for candid shots and cap tosses.

For a more artistic touch, head to the Showalter Fountain framed by IU’s Fine Arts Plaza or the beautiful arches of the Old Crescent. The Memorial Stadium offers a proud, spirited backdrop while the romantic Rose Well House can give your album a charming, timeless feel. Don’t forget a picture in front of your own academic building to capture the heart of your journey.

GradImages allows you to book professional photos ahead of time during the procession lineup. These high-quality photos will feature an IU backdrop and can be ordered as a digital package among other printed package options.

Catch a live show downtown

Downtown Bloomington has plenty of entertainment to keep the celebration going. The Buskirk-Chumley Theater has two Spring Gala ballet performances by the MotionArts Dance Academy at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on May 10.

Catch a performance of Amy Herzog’s “4000 Miles” at the Waldron Arts Center on May 8 and May 10, or head to The Bluebird Nightclub for live music every night from May 8 through May 10, featuring a variety of artists.

Tickets can sell out quickly during graduation week, so it’s a good idea to book in advance. Visit Bloomington has a list of other events that might tickle your fancy.

Stretch your legs and chase a little wonder

Graduation weekend is the perfect chance to slow down, show your family around, and take in the parts of campus you might’ve missed in the rush of college life.

Walk your parents through the Eskenazi Museum of Art and let them see the artistic side of campus or explore the quiet corners of the Lilly Library together. The Biology Greenhouse is a hidden gem filled with verdant plants and the Indiana Memorial Union makes for a great coffee stop or a peaceful walk through its historic halls. While you’re there, don’t hesitate to grab some IU souvenirs from the bookstore.

Outside of campus, Bloomington still has so much to offer. Take a scenic stroll or rent a kayak at Griffy Lake, explore the winding trails at Monroe Lake or walk along the B-Line Trail to soak in the town’s energy. Bryan Park and Switchyard Park offer lush green acres to spend an afternoon in relaxation. The Farmers' Markets at Smithville Community Center and Showers Common are lively and colorful, filled with local goods and friendly faces. For some evening fun, sing your heart out with karaoke in The Root Cellar or challenge your parents to a round of classic arcade fun at The Cade.

Whether you’re shopping, exploring or just enjoying a quiet moment, these little outings make for a memorable way to wrap up the week with your favorite people.
