The Indiana Daily Student is excited to announce its sponsorship of the Student Media Poll, the nation’s only college sports poll led and voted on by college media students.

The SMP, established in January 2021 by IDS journalist and IU second year student Patrick Felts, includes polls for college football and men’s and women’s college basketball. The SMP also awards preseason and year-end awards and publishes podcasts and other content on social media and its website.

“This is a massive moment for the Student Media Poll,” Felts said. “Sponsorship will provide us with the stability necessary to support this ambitious project for years to come, particularly as we continue to grow and expand our presence.”

The Student Media Poll included voters from eight of the 10 FBS conferences this season, generating interest from over 100 student writers and editors from across the country.

The sponsorship will allow the SMP to access additional funding, technological development and editorial support. Additionally, the sponsorship helps ensure a commitment to the SMP’s future while including leadership from across the country, not just at Indiana University.

Goals for the organization moving forward include the establishment of a leadrship board, expansion and growth of the SMP’s online and social media presence, development of weekly newsletters and further exploration of growth and engagement opportunities.

The final SMP football poll of the 2021 season will be released Jan. 11, 2022, following the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in Indianapolis.

Men’s and women’s SMP polls are released Mondays throughout the college basketball season.
