Instant recap: Indiana football loses 24-0 to No. 4 Penn State

In its first Big Ten East game of the season, Indiana football was defeated by No. 4 Penn State 24-0 Saturday night at Beaver Stadium in State College, Pennsylvania. Indiana is now 2-3 on the season.

Indiana was shut out for the first time since 2000, having scored in 246 consecutive games previously. 

After scoring a game-winning two-point conversion against the Nittany Lions a season ago, redshirt junior quarterback Michael Penix Jr. completed 10-of-22 passes for 118 yards with an interception. 

Penix left the game with an injured shoulder in the third quarter and was replaced by redshirt junior quarterback Jack Tuttle. Tuttle finished the game completing 6-of-12 passes for 77 yards and an interception. 

With the loss, the Hoosiers are now 1-65 all-time against teams ranked in the top five of the Associated Press Top 25.

Up next for Indiana is a matchup with No. 17 Michigan State  noon Oct. 16  at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.

FOURTH QUARTER

0:00: Stephen Carr rushes three times on Indiana's last drive and the clock runs out. Indiana loses 24-0, shut out for the first time since 2000.

INTERCEPTION: Tuttle throws an interception near the end zone. Penn State takes over at the five-yard line after a penalty.

FIELD GOAL: Penn State makes a 50-yard field goal. The Nittany Lions have extended their lead with just over eight minutes left in the game. Penn State 24, Indiana 0.

9:19: Indiana picks up one yard on three plays. James Evans has to punt from the back of his end zone. Dotson returns the ball 16 yards to Indiana's 32-yard line.

10:50: Indiana holds up on a goal line stand, preventing a touchdown from one yard out on two consecutive plays. Indiana gets the ball back at the one-yard line.

THIRD QUARTER

0:00: Penn State has picked up 20 yards on its current drive.

1:29: Charles Campbell's field goal attempt is blocked by Penn State.

4:16: Tuttle starts his day throwing three completions in a row for 58 yards.

TOUCHDOWN: Penn State's 61-yard drive ends on a 30-yard completion to Dotson. Indiana's coverage was out of sorts on that play, ending a streak of impressive defense. Penn State 21, Indiana 0.

10:06: Tuttle is sacked immediately after entering the game and Indiana punts again.

Michael Penix Jr. has left the game with an apparent shoulder injury. Jack Tuttle is into the game for Indiana.

12:06: Penn State punts after six plays on the first drive of the half. The teams have combined to punt on seven of the last nine drives.

Indiana won the coin toss and chose to receive, so Penn State will get the ball to start the second half. After a touchback, the ball will be placed at the 25-yard line.

SECOND QUARTER

0:00: Penn State runs out the clock

0:59: Indiana and Penn State continue to trade punts.

2:40: After the interception, Indiana's defense stands tall again. That's the third straight punt for Penn State.

INTERCEPTION: Penix throws a ball up towards the sideline and it gets picked off by the Nittany Lions. The Hoosiers had created momentum with consecutive plays of 18- and 34-yards respectively.

5:53: Penn State has been unable to get the offense going its last two drives. It has run seven plays and punted twice. Indiana ball at its 11.

7:16: Indiana picks up another first down but punts quickly afterwards. Indiana has 74 yards on offense so far.

10:54: Indiana forces a three-and-out in response. The punt pins the Hoosiers at the 9-yard line.

12:16: Indiana's offense has produced nothing beyond Hendershot's reception earlier. It punts again, its third three-and-out (with another drive ending on a turnover on downs on the fourth play). Penn State gets the ball at its 33-yard line.

TOUCHDOWN: Clifford throws for a Penn State touchdown one play after a score was called back for a penalty. Penn State went 96 yards on that drive to extend its lead. Penn State 14, Indiana 0.

14:08: Keyvone Lee rushes 21 yards on third down to Indiana's four-yard line.

FIRST QUARTER

0:00: Penn State picks up another first down and lets the clock run to zero. The Nittany Lions start the second quarter at the Hoosiers' 34 yard-line.

Penn State rushes for 44 yards to reach the Indiana 44-yard line.

2:32: Indiana goes for a fourth down at Penn State's four-yard line, but doesn't reach the line to gain. Penn State gets the ball back at its own four-yard line.

INTERCEPTION: Raheem Layne stepped in from of a pass from Clifford and returned it 23 yards into Penn State's red zone. The Hoosiers take over at the 13-yard line.

3:57: Indiana punts again. Stephen Carr picks up another seven yards, but Indiana has only one first down through three drives.

TOUCHDOWN: Indiana flushes Clifford out of the pocket, but Clifford finds a receiver in the end zone to open the scoring. The drive, which lasted just over five minutes, was 13 plays and 80 yards. Penn State 7, Indiana 0.

6:32: Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford completes a fourth down pass to extend the Nittany Lions' drive. Penn State enters the red zone after a pass interference penalty.

10:42: Penix throws three straight incompletions, forcing Indiana to punt and James Evans' punt goes for a touchback. Penix is 1-7 after two drives.

Michael Penix Jr.'s first completion goes for 35 yards to Peyton Hendershot.

Indiana forces a punt after Penn State picks up one first down.

14:02: Indiana goes three-and-out and punts back to Penn State. The Hoosiers picked up four yards on a Stephen Carr run.

Kickoff: Penn State kicks the ball through the end zone for a touchback. Indiana takes over at the 25 yard line.

Indiana wins the toss and elects to receive. Penn State will get the ball after the half.
