IU lecturer Erin Cooperman was appointed by the unified Monroe County Circuit Court to fill the District 5 seat on the Monroe County Community School Corporation Board of Trustees, according to an MCCSC press release. The court’s decision was released Tuesday.

The seat became vacant on Jan. 25 following the death of Keith Klein, who was a member of the board since 2009.

Cooperman, a lecturer in the School of Public Health, has a child at Rogers Elementary School. She previously directed the AmeriCorps program Healthy Schools Corp. that benefited MCCSC students and families, according to the press release. She received the Bloomington Area Chamber of Commerce 10 under 40 award, which recognizes 10 professionals under 40 years old, in 2011.

The board was originally supposed to appoint someone to the seat before the February meeting. However, according to Indiana code, the decision had to be passed to the court because the board did not choose a new member within 30 days after the vacancy occurred.

Cooperman will take the oath of office at the next board meeting on April 27. She will serve the remainder of Klein’s term, which will end in 2024.
