Instant Recap: IU wins season opener against No. 8 Penn State

TOUCHDOWN: Philyor hauls in Penix's nine-yard pass. IU goes for two and Penix scrambles again. The call on the field is good. After an extensive overview, the call stands. Final: IU 36, Penn State 35.

IU takes over at Penn State's 25-yard line.

TOUCHDOWN: Clifford completes a nine-yard pass to Parker Washington. Penn State 25, IU 28.

IU wins the toss to start overtime and chooses defense. Penn State will line up at IU's 25, per NCAA football overtime rules.

Overtime

Penix kneels out the clock. IU and Penn State head to overtime tied at 28.

:03: Penn State attempts a 57-yard field goal that comes up short.

:21: IU attempts an onside kick that is recovered by Penn State near midfield.

TOUCHDOWN: Penix pushes a one-yard sneak over the goal line. The two-point conversion is good on a sneak by Penix. IU 28, Penn State 28.

:22: Four straight completions Penix, including a five yard pass to Hendershot puts IU on the one-yard line.

TOUCHDOWN: Devyn Ford rushes it in from 14 yards out without any contention from IU. Penn State 28, IU 20.

1:53: IU goes for it on fourth and 21, and Penix's throw to Fryfogle falls incomplete. Penn State gets the ball back with less than two minutes to play on IU's 14.

Penix is sacked twice in a row and gets chased on third down before throwing it away.

2:30: The kickoff goes out of the back of the end zone. IU gets the ball at the 25.

TOUCHDOWN: Clifford connects with Dotson for a 60-yard touchdown. Penn State 21, IU 20.

3:22: Junior tight end Peyton Hendershot drops a pass on third down with no one near him, and IU goes three and out for the second straight drive, eating up about a minute of the clock again. Penn State takes over on its 26.

4:55: Penn State attempts to run the ball up the middle on fourth and one, and IU stuffs the attempt at the line. The Hoosiers will get the ball back at their own 24-yard line

6:09: Sophomore Tiawan Mullen gets called for a pass interference on third down.

Another drive goes nowhere for the Hoosiers. IU gives the ball back to Penn State near midfield after running just over a minute off the clock.

9:19: IU gets the ball on their own 14, up six.

Penn State's drive falters after two big plays from junior Devon Matthews, including a pass breakup and a sack. The Nittany Lions have to punt.

FIELD GOAL: Penix throws three straight incomplete passes after the completion to Marshall. Campbell lines up a 48-yard field goal and knocks it home. IU 20, Penn State 14.

13:46: Penix completes a pass to sophomore Miles Marshall for 14 yards, who drops the ball after being hit, but Penn State is called for targeting. Marshall will leave the game to undergo further testing for a concussion, and junior Jesse Luketa is ejected for targeting.

Penn State's kick goes out of the back of the end zone. IU gets the ball at its own 25.

Fourth Quarter

TOUCHDOWN: Clifford scrambled 35 yards into the end zone after a few missed IU tackles. IU will get the ball to start the fourth quarter. IU 17, Penn State 14.

4:07: Penix's first throw on the ensuing drive is intercepted by senior Lamont Wade on a pass attempt to Ty Fryfogle.

4:13: Penn State's junior kicker Jake Pinegar misses his second kick of the day, this one from 47. IU will get the ball on its own 30-yard line.

4:35: IU calls a timeout before taking a penalty for too many men. Penn State's drive has taken up over seven minutes and traveled 79 yards so far. Penn State has been picking up steady yards on the ground. IU has let to allow a large play this drive, with the longest being a 15-yard pass from Clifford to sophomore Daniel George.

11:52: The drives stalls out quickly, forcing IU to punt. Penn State gets the ball for the first time in the half at Penn State's 19.

After deferring at the beginning of the game, IU receives the kick to open the second half. IU gets the ball at its own 25.

THIRD QUARTER

HALFTIME: Penn State's field goal attempt hits off the post and is no good. IU 17, Penn State 7.

:02: The review overturns the play, giving Penn State the ball with two seconds remaining in the half.

Scott fumbles the football on a rushing play with five seconds remaining in the half. Penn State recovers, but the call on the field is that there is no time remaining on the clock.

:55: Johnson forces a fumble on a Clifford run from inside IU's 10. The Hoosiers take over after their third turnover of the day.

An IU penalty moves Penn State into the red zone.

TOUCHDOWN: Stevie Scott runs it in from two yards out for their second touchdown in three plays. IU 17, Penn State 7.

6:53: Junior Jamar Johnson picks off Clifford deep in IU's territory and returns it to the 4-yard line.

8:04: Penn State drops the ensuing kickoff, but recovers. IU makes a tackle at the 5-yard line and Penn State takes over.

TOUCHDOWN: Scott goes up the middle and runs over a Penn State defender for a 14-yard touchdown. IU's first touchdown of the season gives them their first lead of the game. IU 10, Penn State 7.

8:12: IU has run a combination of short passing plays and run plays to move them into the red zone.

10:31: Junior Reese Taylor returns Penn State's punt 21 yards to set IU up with good field position. The Hoosiers get the ball at their own 38-yard line.

FIELD GOAL: Sophomore Charles Campbell's try from 34-yards out is good. Penn State 7, IU 3.

12:24: Penix misses two throws and IU settles for a field goal.

Junior Stevie Scott III runs three straight plays to give IU another set of downs in the red zone.

Second Quarter

:39: Junior Jaylin Williams picks off Clifford's pass attempt. Hoosiers take over at the Nittany Lions' 38-yard line.

3:53: IU punts again after being penalized on the previous play. Penn State takes over on the 22-yard line.

After an extensive review, it's determined junior Micah McFadden stepped out of bounds before recovering.

On the punt, Penn State junior return man Jahan Dotson runs into his own man and muffs the punt. IU recovers the ball.

After Penix overthrows senior Whop Philyor on third down, IU is forced to punt.

5:19: IU forces Penn State into a three and out on its ensuing possession. A flag on the punt return attempt gives IU the ball on the 32-yard line.

7:15: IU goes three and out on the first offensive possession after sophomore Michael Penix Jr. is sacked. Penn State gets the ball back at their own 35 yard-line.

TOUCHDOWN: On fourth down, Clifford throws a 2-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Pat Freiermuth. Penn State 7, IU 0.

Penn State starts with good field position and uses a mix of up-the-middle rushing plays and selective passing plays to move down to the IU 2-yard line.

7:59: Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford scrambles and hits a 21-yard pass to senior receiver Tariq Castro-Fields.

First Quarter

KICKOFF: IU wins the toss and defers to the second half. Penn State receives the opening kickoff and takes it to the 36-yard line.
