Saalfrank named Freshman of the Week

Sports Filler

IU freshman pitcher Andrew Saalfrank tossed six scoreless innings Sunday to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, along with Maryland’s Tyler Blohm who will share the distinction.

The Hoosiers, 6-7-1, defeated Middle Tennessee 6-0 in Saalfrank’s outing, as the Hoagland, Indiana, native allowed only three hits while striking out six Blue Raiders in his first start at IU’s Bart Kaufman Field.

Sunday marked Saalfrank’s fifth appearance on the mound this season, three of which have been starts.

After not allowing a run over six innings pitched against Middle Tennessee, the freshman’s earned run average dropped from 6.08 to 4.19.

Saalfrank is the second Hoosier thus far in 2017 to earn Freshman of the Week honors, following catcher Jake Matheny’s Feb. 20 selection.
