President McRobbie tells students the refugee ban contradicts IU values

In response to an executive order signed Friday by President Trump IU President Michael McRobbie issued a statement Sunday affirming the school’s commitment to its international students.

The order, which bars travelers and refugees from a list of seven countries from entering the United States, is in contrast to the diversity and innovation IU values, McRobbie said in the press release.

The school, while concerned for the country’s safety, will advocate for its international student population, McRobbie said.

“At the same time, we remain committed to doing all that we can within the bounds of the law to vigorously protect and support IU students, faculty and staff,” McRobbie said in his statement.

His statement follows that of University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel, who confirmed Saturday his school would not be requesting or disclosing students’ immigration status unless the disclosure was legally mandated.

The IU system has multiple students currently enrolled from countries listed on Friday’s executive order, including 67 from Iran, six from Iraq, six from Libya, four from Syria and one from Sudan, according to university.
