IU freshman guard James Blackmon Jr. was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team by the Big Ten’s coaches and media Monday.
Blackmon was second on the team averaging 15.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for the Hoosiers. The former McDonalds All-American started all 30 games in which he was active.
He also earned all-conference honorable mention.
The Fort Wayne native scored in bunches this season, registering eight games of 20 or more points. His season-high came Nov. 20 when he scored 26 points against then-No. 22 SMU.
In 17 Big Ten games—he missed IU’s road game against Wisconsin with an injury—Blackmon scored in double-digits 12 times and averaged 14.1 points per game.
Freshman guard Robert Johnson was not named to the team, despite Crean saying he would have “really loved” for Johnson to be on the list.
Johnson averaged 9.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.
Ohio State guard D’Angelo Russell was named the Big Ten Freshmen of the Year. Russell averaged 19.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game for the Buckeyes.
