IU Art Museum director announces retirement after 27 years on the job

FROM IDS REPORTS

Adelheid “Heidi” Gealt, director of the IU Art Museum, has announced her retirement.

She has been director since 1987 and will assume the role of director emerita once a new director is chosen.

“We thank Heidi for her many years of service as director,” IU provost and executive vice president Lauren Robel said in a press release. “Her leadership helped the museum grow into one of the nation’s finest university museums and one of Bloomington’s true cultural gems.”

The search committee to identify candidates for the new director will be chaired by Bruce Cole, former chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Cole served as the NEH chairman from 2001 to 2009, which makes him the longest serving chairman in the organization’s history.

According to the press release, the search committee will launch a national search to identify, recruit and interview candidates for the position.

The committee includes representation from a variety of departments and disciplines across the University.

It aims to hire a new director who will begin July 1, 2015.
