Heroin overdose leads to 2 arrests

A Bloomington woman was arrested on a warrant after she reported to police that her friend might have overdosed on heroin.

City police and ambulance personnel responded to Janna Marie Smith’s call Saturday at Henderson Court Apartments, Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Lucas Tate said.

Smith, 39, told police she had been looking for her friend and found him unconscious in a parked vehicle, according to court documents. She said she attempted CPR and told police multiple times that Daniel Lee Featherston, 38, was on heroin.

Police found Xanax, hydrocodone and methamphetamine on Smith’s person. She was arrested on a warrant for prior felony charges filed in 2013 and 2014 for attempted sale of a precursor, forgery and theft.

Police also found a syringe containing heroin and a spoon in the area, Tate said. Featherston was transported to IU-Bloomington Hospital for overdosing on heroin, and hospital personnel were able to revive him.

Featherston told police he had driven to Henderson Court Apartments to buy heroin and that he injected himself in the vehicle, according to court documents. After being released from the hospital Featherston was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony.

Smith faces preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of methamphetamine, a class D felony, and two counts of being wanted on a warrant. The Monroe Circuit Court had a scheduled hearing on Monday.
