Teter to receive $2.6 million renovation

The Board of Trustees approved a $2.6 million dollar proposal Friday to replace about 780 windows and 21 doors in Teter Quad.

The project will be funded by Residential Programs and Services and will be completed by August 2015.

The Teter renovation is classified as a “small project” in the University’s Repair and Rehabilitation plans.

Vice President for Capital Planning and Facilities Tom Morrison said in the next four to five years the University plans to eliminate its list of small projects and begin projects which need major funding approval.

Small R and R projects include minor improvements, such as window replacements and restroom upgrades. The estimated amount of deferral total for small projects is $105 million for IU Bloomington’s campus.

Large projects include entire building renovations, such as the impending gutting of Franklin Hall. The estimated amount of deferral total for major projects is $351 million.

Combined, the estimated deferral on R and R projects at the IU Bloomington is $456 million.

IU Bloomington has 556 buildings, 76 percent of which are at least 40 years old, Morrison said. Sixty-six percent of space across all IU campuses is 40 years old.

“While we love those old buildings, it costs more to renovate them over time,” Morrison said.

Major R and R deferral will decrease with a 21.1 percent reduction rate, Morrison said.

Funding for major projects will likely come from state support and private philanthropy, Morrison said.

“Everyone loves new buildings, they’re shiny and sexy,” Morrison said. “We have to advocate for R and R because no one else will.”
