Phone applications attempt to lessen heat-related deaths

FROM IDS REPORTS

The Indiana Department of Labor is reminding residents of a heat risk smartphone app.

The app, offered through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, enables workers to calculate the heat index for their workplace and assess risks based on the index.

The app is free and available for both iOS and Android devices.

In 2011, 61 workers died nationally from heat-related injuries and illnesses, which the U.S. Department said are preventable.

To prevent illness, the U.S. Department encourages drinking plenty of liquids and taking rest breaks.
