Ind. seeks workers at Lake Monroe Sunday

This Sunday, volunteers will head to Lake Monroe for a work project to celebrate Earth Day and cap off National Volunteer Week.

The project is sponsored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and is part of a statewide effort to promote volunteering at state parks and to attract new people to work at Lake Monroe in particular.

“Volunteering gives you a great sense of accomplishment,” Jody Heaston, volunteer coordinator for the DNR’s Division of State Parks & Reservoirs, said in a press release. “You know you are helping manage and conserve our natural and cultural resources.”

The project, which is set to begin at 2 p.m. Sunday and last for 90 minutes, will involve restoring the Paynetown State Recreation Area Interpretive Center near the lake.

The center was damaged by flooding in May 2011, and it is scheduled to be re-opened this May.

Additionally, staff members at the interpretive center are having a callout meeting for other volunteer projects from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Paynetown SRA Interpretive Center.

No RSVP is required for the callout, but one is required for the work project.
