Dr. György Szapáry, Hungary’s ambassador to the United States, will visit IU from this evening until March 9, and will present a free public lecture. He will also attend the annual commemoration of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution, according to a press release.
The commemoration and reception event is being sponsored by the IU Hungarian Cultural Association, the Department of Central Eurasian Studies and the Hungarian Studies Program.
“More than 30 years ago, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences invested in the future of Hungarian studies at IU by endowing a professorship that has brought top Hungarian scholars to Bloomington,” IU Vice President for International Affairs David Zaret said in a press release. “Hungarian studies have flourished at IU, and we are honored that the Hungarian government continues to support and participate in this program.”
Szapáry previously worked in Washington, D.C., for 25 years with the International Monetary Fund, where he last served as representative for Hungary.
He is also the grandson of a former prime minister of Hungary, according to the press release.
The IU Central Eurasian studies, economics and political science departments; the Hungarian Studies Program; the European Union Center; the Russian and East European Institute; the Kelley School of Business and the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center will all sponsor his visit.
