Bills to Watch

HB 1001 — Employee’s right to work
After a week of calm waters, the House is expected to pick up controversial right-to-work legislation again today. Democrats have walked out of the 2012 session the last two weeks due to the Republican effort to force the issue through as quickly as possible.

HB 1149 — Smoking ban
After making it a priority in his State of the State address last week, Gov. Mitch Daniels has pushed for a statewide-smoking ban, with many lawmakers and anti-smoking advocates pushing for a law in place before the Super Bowl comes to Indianapolis.

SB 0234 and HB 1196 — Synthetic drugs (including “bath salts”)
The Senate and House both have bills that would ban synthetic drugs such as “bath salts” that mimic marijuana. This is in addition to the law passed last year that banned synthetic marijuana known as “spice.”

SB 0004 — Human trafficking
In just about every public address since the beginning of the year, Daniels has brought up the pressing need to pass comprehensive anti-human trafficking laws before the Super Bowl. Large events like the Super Bowl tend to attract sex offenders, and Daniels wants the law in place by the time February rolls around.
