The College of Arts and Sciences will honor four alumni and the 2011 Distinguished Faculty Award recipient at its annual recognition banquet Oct. 21.
Donald Fehr, Carolyn Reidy and Adam Robinson Jr. will receive the College’s 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award, and Erin Patrick will receive the Outstanding Young Alumni Award.
Ellen Ketterson, distinguished professor of biology and gender studies, has been selected to receive the 2011 Distinguished Faculty Award.
Ketterson also has ties with the Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior and the Kinsey Institute for Research on Sex, Gender and Reproduction.
“They have distinguished themselves in a certain capacity, and that’s why we recognize them,” said Vanessa Cloe, director of alumni relations with the College.
“Because we want to showcase not only to our College of Arts and Sciences alumni, but to Indiana University and our society as a whole that there is so much you can do with a liberal arts education.”
The award recipients are selected by the College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Board.
Ellen Ketterson — 2011 Distinguished Faculty Award
RESEARCH Ketterson has been studying a type of songbird called the dark-eyed junco for more than 25 years. Her work has made major contributions to evolutionary biology, according to a press release.
CAREER Ketterson has published more than 130 papers and served in editor positions for the major journals in her field.
She has received awards from the Animal Behavior Society and the American Ornithologists Union. She co-founded IU’s Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior.
Erin Patrick – 2011 Outstanding Young Alumni Award
DEGREE Bachelor’s of arts in French and political science, 1998.
WORK Patrick works with aid and advocacy groups to include cooking fuel in humanitarian aid supplies.
She wrote “Beyond Firewood: Fuel Alternatives and Protection Strategies for Displaced Women and Girls,” a report that has brought recognition to her call for policy guidelines for the humanitarian system, according to a press release.

WORK Fehr is the executive director of the National Hockey League Players Association.
Carolyn Reidy – 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award
DEGREE Master of arts in English, 1974, and Ph.D. in English, 1982.
WORK Reidy is the president and CEO of Simon and Schuster, a publishing company.
Adam Robinson Jr. – 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award
DEGREE Bachelor’s of arts in political science, 1972.
WORK Robinson is the srgeon General and chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery for the U.S. Navy
