Cause of student’s death is unconfirmed

Monroe County Coroner Nicole Meyer confirmed an autopsy took place Thursday for Matthew Erickson, an IU freshman who died in his room in Read Center on Wednesday.

A cause of death will not be confirmed until toxicology reports come back, she said.

Meyer said the process could take three to six weeks.

There was no cause of death at this point, and the performance of a toxicology test is standard procedure, she said.

“There was no visible indication that drugs had been used,” Meyer said. “This type of thing is standard practice for an unexpected death such as this.”
