Defensive end, safety commit to IU football team

The IU football team added two players to their 2012 recruiting class with commitments from defensive end Shawn Heffern Aug. 8, and safety Sebastian Smith Aug. 9.

Smith, from Central High School in Pickerington, Ohio, joins Lakota West High School’s Dawson Fletcher as 2012 recruits projected for the secondary.

Smith, listed at 6 feet 2 inches and 164 pounds, is ranked 40th nationally among safeties by Rivals.com.

He is also ranked by the site as the 46th best prospect from the state for the class of 2012.

Heffern, from Carmel High School, is listed at 6 feet 6 inches and 240 pounds.

He is the second defensive end in the 2012 class for the Hoosiers, joining New Castle Chrysler High School’s Adam Kranda.

IU now has 17 commitments for the class of 2012, including nine for the defensive side of the ball.
