Secretary of State denies voter fraud allegations

Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White testified before the Indiana Recount Commission, which is investigating allegations that White committed voter fraud during the 2010 election.

The Indiana Democratic Party has been demanding the hearing for months.

The Secretary of State acts as the state’s commissioner of elections.

Democrats claim White was registered to vote in his ex-wife’s district while he lived in a condo with his new wife in a different district.

Particularly egregious, the Democrats claim, was that White was a member of the Fishers Town Council for the district where his ex-wife lived and was receiving $1,000 per month for his job while he lived in a different district.

His new wife’s condo was not in the district that he represented.

White claims he had no intention of living in the condo that he owned with his new wife until after the election.

He and his current and former wives say he spent most of that time period living in his car.

White’s ex-wife said during the time period in question he spent more nights at her house than with his new wife, who was living in the condo with her daughter.

White’s ex-wife acknowledged that this living situation was “atypical ... There’s a relationship that people just don’t understand,” she said, according to the Indianapolis Business Journal.

On a Republican Party document filed in July 2010, White listed his ex-wife’s home as his mailing address and his current wife’s condo as his physical address, according to the IBJ.

Democratic attorney Karen Celestino-Horseman characterized White’s listing of his ex-wife’s address as simply a “mail drop” and asked White repeatedly whether he had been truthful about his address on several different documents, the IBJ reported.

“I did not provide false information,” White said. “I just wanted to be honest.”

The recount commission is expected to rule by June 30.
