Gibbs growing up before our eyes

Freddie Gibs

WEEKEND remembers just a short while ago, last Novemember, when rapper extraordinaire Freddie Gibbs was preparing for his show at the Bishop, chatting on the phone with our reporters about music, sports and some of the partying he’s incited at various Indiana colleges.

One line from that interview particularly reverberates in light of the artist’s recent activity: “I don’t really think I’m famous, yet.”

Earlier this month, Gibbs signed to Young Jeezy’s imprint, Corporate Thugz Entertainment. Already, Gibbs has been working on new material, including a collaboration piece with his record-boss, Jeezy, called “Stripes (Run D MC)”. Along with “Stripes”, Tuesday brought fans another Gibbs compilation with The Hood Internet, Elizabeth Harper of Class Actress and Telli of Ninjasonik.

Gibbs’ Hood Internet collaboration, “VCR”, is a spin on the original from the British electro-indie rock band, The xx. Both “Stripes” and “VCR” showcase Gibbs’ masterful rhyme, assonance, alliteration and willingness to take bold steps, as well as a penchant for creativity.

Both songs are available online for free download and make a great addition to Gibbs’ quickly growing discography.

The future looks bright for Freddie Gibbs and alongside his fans, WEEKEND eagerly awaits more information on the release of his full-length CTE project.
