Johnson apointed to vice provost position

David Johnson was appointed vice provost for enrollment management Friday, Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson announced. Since May 2010, Johnson has served as the interim vice provost for enrollment management.

“I’m delighted with the outcome,” Hanson said. “We ended up with an internal candidate, and he’s familiar with the job, and he’s already doing it, so we know he can do a great job.”

The search committee was composed of faculty and staff from the Bloomington campus, which included staff who worked in enrollment management as well as faculty in various schools.

“There was a wide range of people on the committee, and we interviewed a number of candidates from around the country,” said committee chair Jean Robinson, associate dean for faculty and academic programs in the College of Arts and Sciences.

As vice provost for enrollment management, Johnson will recruit, enroll and retain students for the IU-Bloomington campus.

“The vice provost for enrollment management is a big position,” Robinson said. “This is the kind of position that is often seen as a crowning point of one’s career.”

The search committee looked for a candidate that had a lot of experience and understood the important connection between recruiting students and retention on campus, Robinson said.

“We wanted to have someone who wanted to connect enrollment issues with the academic side,” Robinson said.

Robinson said Johnson was chosen because he stood out as a candidate.

“He was very good at articulating the ways that the admission side connects to the academic side,” Robinson said. “The committee liked that he had some really good ideas about that.”

As the interim vice provost, Johnson worked and helped with recruiting, marketing and programing initiatives to attract academically talented students to IU-Bloomington, according to the press release.

“We’re really excited that he agreed to take the job, and we’re looking forward to some more innovation in connecting recruitment and admission with students and faculty that are already here,” Robinson said.
