Woodlawn Field and Track will temporarily close June 14-25 to enable water line installation for the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Courtyard Project.
According to the IU Foundation website, the project aims to add 24,000 square feet to the school’s building, including a new auditorium-classroom and 32 to 34 new offices.
“The water line has to come directly through Woodlawn Field in order to be taken through to the new courtyard in the HPER building,” said Kim Gray, director of marketing and sponsorship for Campus Recreational Sports. “The area dug up will be replaced by sod, so it will immediately be playable again.”
One good reason for beginning the project now is that the summer is a period of low usage, Gray said.
“Any time you have a facility, you expect that maintenance is going to have to occur to enjoy it long-term. This makes sense all the way around,” she said. “The main point of it is it will be a great enhancement to the field for the students.”
