Hilltop exhibits daffodil varieties

Daffodils

Hilltop Garden and Nature Center sponsored a daffodil show Sunday that showcased more than 250 daffodils. All of the flowers were gathered from individual collections as well as donations from area gardeners.

“We do this every year to show the community all the different types of daffodils,” Hilltop Educational Foundation member Nancy Martin said. “Most people think of a daffodil as a yellow on yellow, but there are so many more.”

At the event, there were 10 tables full of 11 different divisions of daffodils. Each table displayed different shades of yellow, white, orange and even pink daffodils, with a couple of divisions producing double and multiple bloomers per stem.

“It’s hard to pick your favorite flower. Actually it’s probably impossible given the different variety,” said Terry Baer, event attendee and flower arranger.

Hilltop Gardens started in 1948 when Herman B Wells allocated five acres of land on the far east side of campus.

Since its opening, the center has provided educational opportunities and display gardens to IU and the Bloomington Community.

Like the daffodil show, the center sponsors multiple events and classes throughout the year to teach and share with the community about the different gardening topics.

“We just like to bring in our flowers to show them,” Martin said. “This event is a great way to share the abundance.”
