Hoosiers will have more access to the Internet and to public library materials across the state under new standards adopted by the Indiana State Library and Historical Board.
The board unanimously approved the new requirements, which take effect Jan. 1, 2011, pending the governor and attorney general’s approval.
The standards require libraries to have a minimum number of computers based on how many patrons the branch serves. Libraries must also maintain a Web site and online catalog accessible from any computer.
A State Library spokesman says it already provides free Web sites for public libraries. It also offers free software for maintaining an online catalog. He says more than half of the state’s libraries already meet the requirements, and the rest will need only minor changes.
