Hundreds attend candlelight vigil for IU professor

Don Belton

Hundreds of people gathered in Bloomington Friday at a candlelight vigil honoring a slain Indiana University professor.

Friends said the death of 53-year-old Don Belton came as a shock and remembered him as a beloved member of the community.

Belton was an assistant professor of English at IU and taught at the University of Michigan and elsewhere before coming to Bloomington.

Twenty-five-year-old Michael J. Griffin of Bloomington pleaded not guilty to charges he killed Belton. Court documents show that Griffin told police he fatally stabbed Belton and said Belton sexually assaulted him days before the attack.

Belton's friends say they don't believe Griffin's accusation. Griffin is being held without bond in the Monroe County Jail.
