Outdoor Adventures offers discounted gear in sale

Wetsuits, kayaks, canoes and cross country skis are just some of the items that will be on sale at IU Outdoor Adventures Used Gear Sale.

Gear specialist and trip leader Seth Pettit said the sale is the only event of this type in the community.

Anyone who is a trip leader or associated with IUOA can set up a table and sell whatever sports gear they have to offer. Pettit himself sold a skateboard at last year’s sale.

“You never know what’s going to show up,” he said.

The sale will include a wide range of merchandise, from large items like sleeping bags, tents and canoes, to smaller accessories like camping cookware, climbing helmets and water containers.

Ginelle Heller, assistant program coordinator for IUOA, said most of their gear has about a five-year turnover rate, so this sale is the most economical way to make room for new inventory.

“Everyone likes inexpensive gear,” Pettit said.

Sophomore Jamie Becker, who attended the sale last year, agreed.

“It is an economical gateway into the adventure world,” Becker said.
It is an opportunity for more of the population to buy quality gear. Becker also said he enjoyed the social aspect of the sale, exchanging adventure stories with other outdoor enthusiasts.

In addition to gear rental, IUOA offers adventure and customized trips for almost anything nature-related, including hiking, camping, caving and rock-climbing. Water activities include kayaking, canoeing and whitewater rafting.

The used gear sale will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but Heller advises attendees to arrive before all the good items are sold.

“It could be a mad rush, so get there early,” she said.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday Dec. 5 at the Indiana Memorial Union Frangipani Room
