Hoosiers give up 42 in loss to Michigan State

Senior running back Marcus Thigpen scores one of his three touchdowns during the Hoosiers' 42-29 loss to Michigan State Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Thigpen finished with 207 total yards.

For the second straight week the Hoosiers let up 42 points, and for the second straight week, they lost.

Instead of Michigan State dealing the final blow of the game it was IU who did itself in their 42-29 defeat.

With 1:39 left in the third quarter, backup quarterback Ben Chappell connected with sophomore wideout Terrance Turner for a 97-yard touchdown strike.

The play made both the Michigan State and Hoosier crowds stand up and cheer. The Hoosier crowd was happy because of the touchdown, the Spartans because there was a little yellow piece of cloth 108 behind Turner’s touchdown celebration.

The call was holding, and the penalty occurred in the endzone resulting in a Michigan State safety.

"Have you ever seen anything like that," IU coach Bill Lynch asked reporters in his post-game press conference.

The two points simultaneously gave the Spartans a seven point lead and deflated the Hoosiers' spirits.

Heisman hopeful Javon Ringer of Michigan State was out -own by the Hoosiers’ Marcus Thigpen, one of the few bright spots for IU.

Ringer finished with 44 carries, 198 yards and a score.

Thigpen finished with 207 total yards and three touchdowns.
