Southern Indiana teen dies at local quarry

–From IDS reports\nA Washington, Ind., teen died Saturday while at Rooftop Quarry with friends, Monroe County Sheriff Jim Kennedy said.\nWalter G. Ayala, 18, failed to resurface after jumping into the water hole at the quarry, located off Empire Mill Road.\nA bystander who happened to already be in the area made the 911 call at 5:21 p.m., said to Deputy Coroner Liz Fiato. Ayala was found by divers at 5:48 p.m.\nRooftop Quarry is owned by Indiana Limestone and was featured in the 1979 movie “Breaking Away.” The area is a popular spot for “cliff jumping,” and is known as a dangerous area because of debris still in the water. \nAn autopsy was scheduled for Monday morning in Terre Haute. Cause of death should be known later this week.\n“We’re doing the autopsy to find out if there was any trauma involved or if it was just a drowning,” Fiato said.
