Students, faculty and professional journalists gathered Friday in the Oak room of the Indiana Memorial Union to determine who will serve as fall 2008 Indiana Daily Student editor-in-chief, summer 2008 IDS editor-in-chief and 2008-09 Arbutus editor-in-chief. \nJunior Audrie Garrison, currently the IDS general assignments editor, was selected as fall 2008 IDS editor-in-chief. \n“I would like (the IDS) to be thought of as a paper that is accurate and responsible; I want a very professional paper,” Garrison said. “I hope to place a strong emphasis on strong beat reporting and want people to think of the IDS as a place to get the best news fast.” \nWith two internships under her belt and previous experience as a reporter, city/state editor, campus editor, managing editor and general assignments editor, Garrison has built up the experience needed to be a strong leader. \n“Audrie has a wealth of great experience, she is immensely talented and I expect her to do great things,” said Nancy Comiskey, interim director of IU Student Media.\nSenior Michael Reschke, currently the editor-in-chief of WEEKEND magazine, was selected as summer 2008 editor-in-chief.\n“It feels good to have the anxiety over,” Reschke said. “My main goals are to recruit a good staff and use the summer publications to direct readers to our Web site. I want to get (students) excited about journalism, as it is a privilege to work for a place like this.” \nReschke said it is important to keep his staff motivated. His aspiration is to get reporters to tell stories in multiple ways and continue with video and audio podcasts on the Web. \n“Michael has a lot of experience and has been with us for a long time,” Comiskey said. “He has held more management positions and he has good ideas to put the Web to use in the future.” \nJunior Lea Wilcox, currently the managing editor of the Arbutus, was selected as the 2008-09 Arbutus editor-in-chief. \n“I would like to try and cover more universal stories that every college student can relate to,” Wilcox said. “I want to make sure every big issue gets covered.” \nWilcox wants to focus on marketing and selling the book. She said that if they sell one more book than they did this year, then that will be an accomplishment in itself. \n“Lea has been (current Arbutus editor-in-chief) Meg (Woods)’s right-hand man all year,” Comiskey said. “It will be a really smooth transition, and she will really bring her own unique vision to the 2009 book.” \nWith all of the applicants, the IU Student Media Board had some tough decisions to make, but Comiskey and IDS adviser Ruth Witmer said they feel confident in their future leaders. \n“It takes a lot of courage to apply,” Witmer said. “All five candidates are talented and have a lot to offer. We are lucky to have all of them.”
