New exhibit inspired by Romanian propaganda featured at SoFA Library

More than 35 pieces of art will be on display this week in the IU Fine Arts Library Foyer. The exhibit, titled “Romania Redrawn,” features art based on old propaganda photos set out for disposal outside of the Romanian consulate in New York.\nRomanian artist Irina Hasnas Pascal found the photos and invited other artists to create works inspired by them. Hasnas Pascal grew up in Romania when it was under the controlling and repressive regime of former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. The artists that contributed to the exhibit are a mixture of native Romanians, immigrants and local artists. The featured artists take Hasnas Pascal’s idea in many different directions, creating a powerful commentary on propaganda, commerce, infrastructure, loss and oppression in Romania.\nThis exhibit coincides with a conference titled “The Hour of Romania” and hosted by the IU Romanian Studies program. The conference will be held Thursday through Saturday and will focus on the field of Romanian studies and its future in this country. Romania joined the European Union this year and is undergoing political and social changes. \nThe exhibit will be on display through Sunday in the IU Fine Arts Library, 1133 E. Seventh St. The museum is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
