Man killed by police in Indy mall

Undercover narcotics sting injures 1 officer

INDIANAPOLIS -- An undercover police officer fatally shot a man Friday afternoon in the parking lot of one of the state's largest shopping malls after the man tried to run over the officer, authorities said.\nThe confrontation happened about 50 yards from the entrance to a sporting goods store at Castleton Square Mall and left Sgt. Garth Schwomeyer with hip and knee injuries after he was pinned between two cars, said Capt. Phil Burton of the Marion County sheriff's department. Schwomeyer was treated and released from a hospital.\nSchwomeyer was among five undercover officers at the mall on the city's northeast side as part of a narcotics investigation when the man drove the car at him after Schwomeyer had identified himself as a police officer, Burton said.\nThe wounded man, whose name was not immediately released, died after being taken to Methodist Hospital. No other injuries were reported.\nThe mall remained open with a steady flow of shoppers after the shooting.\nBurton said he did not know how many times Schwomeyer shot at the driver and that the man was using his car as a weapon against the officer.\n"He drove it at our officer and actually hit our officer and pinned him, and then actually backed away and tried again to leave the scene," Burton said.\nNo details were released on the narcotics investigation, but a passenger in the car, Andrea M. Long, 21, of Anderson, was arrested on warrants for felony possession of a controlled substance and for driving with a suspended license.\nBurton said none of the police activity took place inside the mall. "Their investigation was only outside in the parking lot," he said\nSimon Property Group, Castleton Square's owner, said mall officials had no advance knowledge of the police activity.\n"Our primary concern is always for the safety of our shoppers and mall employees, and this regrettable and unforeseen situation is in no way reflective of the safe shopping environment that Castleton Square affords," the company's statement said.\nMall security guards prevented reporters from speaking with shoppers and mall workers after the shooting.
