Hoosiers drop game, lose trophy to Purdue

With the Golden Boot on the line, the Hoosiers weren't able to muster enough offense to take down rival Purdue in their final regular season conference game of the year. The Boilermakers got their 10th win of the season in a 2-1 victory Friday night, holding the Hoosiers scoreless for most of the game.\nIn the first half, the Hoosiers seemed to have the advantage, outshooting Purdue 7-4. Senior midfielder Emily Hotz had two blasts that required Purdue goalkeeper Lauren Mason to make two good saves. The Hoosiers almost scored later when freshman forward Megan Pipkens beat her defender, but again Mason was able to make a good save. Just before the end of the half, senior goalkeeper Shaunna Daugherty made a good save to keep Purdue scoreless in the first half. With neither team able to do much, the first half ended 0-0. Hotz said the Hoosier offense wasn't able to capitalize on their opportunities.\n"Basically, it was just one of those days," Hotz said. "We had some good shots that just didn't go in. We'll be able to capitalize next game and get it back."\nThe second half would be a different story however. Early in the second half, both teams had good chances to score, but again neither team was able to capitalize. The Boilermakers would finally open up the game at the 65 minute mark when Purdue forward Courtney Coppedge headed in a ball past Daugherty. Just two minutes later, the Boilermakers would strike again to go ahead 2-0. Purdue forward Annette Kent beat Daugherty after taking a cross from teammate Lauren Sesselmann. IU coach Mick Lyon said the Hoosiers were hampered by some injuries.\n"I think the biggest thing was that we ran out of bodies," Lyon said. "With (freshman defender Lauren) Lamping out, we weren't able to rotate much at the back and I think that significantly hurt us."\nThe Hoosiers refused to give up, and finally got on the board with less than two minutes left when senior defender Carly Everett scored her first goal of her career off a corner kick. The effort would be too little too late for the Hoosiers, with Purdue taking a 2-1 victory. Everett said the Boilermakers were too much for the Hoosiers.\n"For the most part, we stuck to our game plan, but they were very strong and I think that's how they beat us in the end," Everett said.\nThe Hoosiers take on Miami of Ohio next Friday in a non-conference contest. Admission is free for anybody who wears a Halloween costume.\n-- Contact staff writer Cory Steger at csteger@indiana.edu.
