Team goes 4-1 over break

Spring break went well for the IU baseball team as the Hoosiers finished on a high note with a 4-3 12-inning victory over Vermont Saturday in Bradenton, Fla. After being shutout for five straight innings, junior David Hughes broke through with a single to left, scoring senior Kenny Marrs to propel IU (13-2) over the Catamounts. IU went 5-1 over the break.\nThe Vermont win earned coach Bob Morgan, in his 20th season as IU's coach, his 998th career victory, leaving him only two short of the personal milestone. \nJunior Cody Wargo's RBI-double drew first blood for the Hoosiers in the bottom of the second, plating senior Chad Coder and a 1-0 lead.\nThe game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when senior leadoff man Mark Calkins singled to open the frame. Following a Marrs sacrifice bunt to advance Calkins to second, sophomore Corby Heckman continued his hot hitting with a single to left to score Calkins. Heckman would later score on a passed ball to extend the IU lead to 3-0.\nThe Catamounts countered in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits against junior Adam Pegg and senior Ryan Smith. Vermont sophomore Bobby Tewksbary's hit was the big blow as it scored two Catamounts to even the score, 3-3.\nIn the 12th Marrs got the Hoosiers started with a walk and was advanced to third on a single by Heckman and a sac fly by junior Kevin Mahar before scoring on Hughes' hit.\nHeckman went 3-5 to continue pestering pitchers with a .396 batting average batting out of the three hole. Mahar and Wargo also had two hits for the Hoosiers as senior Kevin O'Brien (1-0) picked up the win for IU.\nAlthough the Vermont win finished the week successfully, the week started the same way with a 5-1 victory over Bradley. Senior Jacob Cary pitched a complete game for the Hoosiers, scattering six hits over nine innings to improve his record to 3-0. Mahar and Calkins led IU's offensive charge with four and three hits, respectively. Following a rainout in which IU was scheduled to play the University of Massachusetts, the Hoosiers instead took on Northeastern on Tuesday and fell 3-2 in a rain-shortened contest. IU was threatening in the top of the ninth when the game was called due to rain.\nFollowing the disappointing loss to the Huskies, IU rebounded with an 11-7 victory over Farleigh-Dickinson and a 5-2 win over the Black Nights of Army. Cary again went the distance for IU, scattering five hits and seven strike outs over nine innings to improve his record to 4-0.\nIU returns to action Tuesday against Saginaw Valley for a 3 p.m. game at Sembower Field.
