Sigma Nu accused of hazing

Sigma Nu Fraternity is currently under investigation after a reported hazing incident that allegedly put one student in the hospital.\nAccording to IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger, a student living in Foster Quad made a phone call to the police around 5 p.m. Wednesday reporting the incident. The student complained he was hazed at the fraternity on Feb. 13, during a pledge event from 6 p.m. to midnight. Minger said the student reported being injured with cuts on and around his right wrist and later being taken to the Bloomington Hospital by a person at the fraternity. IUPD would not release the name of the student for security reasons.\nAlthough the University and IUPD are taking the report very seriously, Lt. Minger made it clear that the fraternity is currently in no trouble. \n"Right now this is just an alleged incident," he said. "We're just trying to substantiate the allegations."\nEven though this case is just being put together, Minger noted that hazing is illegal by Indiana state statute and a serious offense that the public needs to know about it. \n"We want to make sure that the community is aware of any unsafe conditions," he said. "I'm sure there are incidents of all kinds that may happen within the course of the (greek) community that don't get reported to the police for a variety of reasons."\nWhile the claims have yet to be proven in this case, Assistant Dean of Students Jim Gibson said incidents like this in the past have all ended differently.\n"There's a range of sanctions available to the University to punish those found responsible," he said. \nGibson added that a number of things usually come into play throughout the process. \n"In the past, we've based it on the severity of the situation, past behavior of the fraternity and the attitudes of those involved," he said.\nThe names of witnesses and people involved could not be released and the investigation is ongoing. Members of Sigma Nu declined to comment on the situation.
