Behrman search resumes

Authorities recover 'evidentiary' items in Salt Creek

Several law enforcement agencies resumed the search Wednesday for an IU student missing for more than two years. Meanwhile, a television station in Indianapolis is reporting new details in the case.\nThe Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bloomington Police Department, the Monroe County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources are all involved in looking for evidence related to the disappearance of Bloomington-native Jill Behrman.\nIn April, investigators began searching the southern Monroe County's Salt Creek, but flooding brought their efforts to an early end. Investigators have returned to the creek just south of Kent Road, just off McGowan Road because "the water levels are a bit lower now," FBI spokesman Doug Garrison said.\nDivers have been searching Salt Creek for evidence. Among other agencies, the Department of Natural Resources is providing its assistance to investigators.\n"The DNR has divers and equipment available," DNR spokesman Stephen Sellers said.\nFBI Special Agent Gary Dunn said that the investigators were able to obtain items of "evidentiary value."\n"It was a positive day for us," Dunn said.\nGarrison said the information that led investigators to Salt Creek cannot be discussed. By late Wednesday, they had discovered nothing new at the area.\nWRTV in Indianapolis reported Tuesday there are three suspects now held by law enforcement officials on unrelated charges. The report states one of the suspects is Uriah J. Clouse. \nClouse, 26, of Ellettsville, was named by authorities earlier this year in connection with Behrman's disappearance. The two other alleged suspects have not yet been named, and no one has been charged.\nThe Bloomington Police Department was unavailable to confirm these reports. \nDunn would not comment on the report of the suspects and he would "neither confirm or deny" the reports.\n"They can report that the moon is made out of green cheese if they want," Dunn said."\nBehrman was last seen May 31, 2000, riding her bike in southern Bloomington around 9:30 a.m. She had just completed her first year at IU in 2000. Authorities believe that she was struck by a vehicle while riding. Her bicycle was found in Ellettsville soon after her disappearance. FBI officials in June described a pickup truck that may have been used.\nAccording to the WRTV report, one of the suspects indicated to a source that her body was wrapped in plastic after being hit by the vehicle and dumped in water.\n$100,000 is being offered in reward for information leading to her location or the identity of anyone responsible for her disappearance. \nBehrman is described as being 20-years-old, 5-foot-7-inches tall with blue eyes, brown hair, a tan complexion and an athletic build. She was last seen wearing black riding shorts, a red and white GT sleeveless jersey and a dark green helmet. \nAnyone with information concerning Jill Behrman and her disappearance are urged to call the Bloomington Police Department at 349-3313 or the local FBI office at 332-9275.\nRegion Editor Matt Rodewald contributed to this report.
