Recruits line up for men's spring rush

Pledging in spring proves more difficult

In the first half hour of the men's spring formal recruitment callout Friday, more than 100 men walked through the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union to talk with representatives from chapters and the Interfraternity Council about the positive aspects of going greek.\n"I'm really pleased," said junior Nick McCallum, IFC vice-president of recruitment. "The fraternities are taking it very seriously. They're wearing their letters, and they've got lots of material. It's going good."\nRepresentatives from the men's chapters maintain that spring rush is much harder than fall because there's not as much time for potential members to meet as many people from the houses.\n"For fall rush there's a tour of all the houses, and much more time to get to know the guys," said junior Matt Leach, a member of Kappa Sigma. \nBut junior Brent Pederson, a member of Acacia, said there is one major perk to rushing in the spring -- smaller pledge classes. Leach added that spring rush is mostly for men who aren't really sure about rushing and want to learn more about greek life. \n"I'm looking for new experiences I guess," freshman Doug Laux said. "I'm ready to get out of the dorms, go to frat parties, and just have a group of cool guys to hang out with during college."\nSenior Jason Steliga, a member of Kappa Sigma, stressed the positive aspects of going through recruitment, even if some men may decide it's not for them. \n"My biggest pet-peeve are people who have all these negative things to say about fraternities and the greek system, and they've never gone through it to see for themselves," Steliga said. "If they'd just come out, they'd see what it's really all about. The best perk of being in a fraternity are the guys...It's a brotherhood, and I can count on any one of my brothers"
