New information in Jill Behrman case

Pickup truck may have been involved in disappearance

The two-year anniversary of IU student Jill Behrman's disappearance was met with new information from the FBI on Friday. Behrman was reported missing after she was last seen riding her bike on the south side of Bloomington in May of 2000. \nFBI Special Agent Gary Dunn said officials believe the vehicle involved in the disappearance was an older construction pickup truck that was possibly used without the consent of the owner. He also said the vehicle is believed to be the same one that was reported driving wildly on May 30, 2000 along Lampkins Ridge Road. Investigators would not comment on how they received the information about the vehicle.\nDunn went on to say the owner of the truck might be afraid of being charged, but he urged that if he or she is not directly involved with the case, the owner would not be convicted. Police believe the then 19-year-old Behrman was accidentally struck, and was then taken away in a cover-up effort.\n"I'm happy when they come up with anything," said junior Mandy Madden, a friend of Behrman. "I'm relieved when they find something." \n"But I really won't be relieved until the case is solved."\nBrian, Behrman's older brother, felt the same.\n"I honestly don't know what to think," he said. "We've heard a lot of different things."\nUriah J. Clouse, 26, of Ellettsville, is currently the only suspect in the case who has been publicly identified. He is being held in the Brown County Jail for connection to an attempted abduction of an 18-year-old Monroe County woman two weeks following the Behrman disappearance.\n"The truck belongs to someone in Bloomington," Madden said. "But we're not too sure if the owner was involved in the incident."\n"We aren't sure if it's part of (Clouse's) alibi."\nDunn said once the water levels in Salt Creek decrease, further investigations will take place. The site is located not far from previously searched areas.\nIU senior Rhiannon Spain sympathizes with Behrman's family and friends.\n"I think it's terrible. My uncle lives in the Behrmans' neighborhood and I just saw people the other day putting out more yellow ribbons," she said. "I think this whole thing really does make people think twice about going out alone."\nThe day-to-day efforts to maintain hope are key to the Behrman family and friends such as Madden.\n"People in the community who know of the case sometimes forget about it," Madden said. "I've grown a lot closer to Brian and everyone since this happened, and this doesn't go away for us. We deal with this every day."\nBrian's efforts to cope with the absence of his sister continue as well.\n"We've gotten lots of clues over the last two years and nothing's really panned out," he said. "It's just a waiting game for me."\nBehrman is described as being 20-years-old, 5-foot-7 inches tall with blue eyes, brown hair, a tan complexion and an athletic build. She was last seen wearing black riding shorts, a red and white GT sleeveless jersey and a dark green helmet. \nAnyone with information concerning Jill Behrman and her disappearance are urged to call the Bloomington Police Department at 349-3313 or the local FBI office at 332-9275.
