Three matches. Three wins.
No. 14 Indiana men’s soccer started its season-opening homestand at Bill Armstrong Stadium with a 3-0-0 record. Now, the Hoosiers will travel to Louisville, Kentucky, for their first road trip of the season against the University of Louisville on Monday.
Indiana pulled off clean-sheet victories against the University of Evansville and Butler University last week. The wins were helped by all-around performances from many Indiana players, including a season-high 33-shot total against the Bulldogs. Here’s what to know ahead of Indiana’s fourth game of the season:
Indiana carries defensive momentum into matchup
Along with dangerous offensive performances, the Hoosiers’ backline has stacked up against their competition to start the season.
With senior Alex Barger on the left, juniors Josh Maher and Nick McHenry in central defending positions and junior Nolan Kinsella on the right, Indiana has only given up six shots on goal this season — including no chances against Butler on Aug. 27.
“We have some of the best forwards in the country,” McHenry said in a postgame press conference after Butler. “So, you know, if we keep a clean sheet, we know we're going to get one or two goals. That's how you win games.”
The mentality has worked for the Hoosiers to start the season. Louisville brings a more dangerous offense than previous opponents, as the Cardinals have compiled eight goals over three games. But Indiana’s defense has brushed away many opposition chances inside the final third.
Along with the backline’s defensive ability, Indiana has been able to successfully push up the field when in the attacking half. McHenry gave the Hoosiers their only goal against Butler after slotting home a rebound off a corner kick. Additionally, Barger has produced a shot in all three games, including two shots on goal from outside the box against Butler.
But the Hoosiers’ defensive mentality has been facilitated by junior goalkeeper Michal Mroz.
While Mroz didn’t face a shot on goal during the Butler match, made five saves during Indiana’s opening two contests. Coming from Evansville, Mroz has shown a strong ability in the net and in controlling his team’s positioning.
“I thought he didn't complicate the game,” Indiana head coach Todd Yeagley said after the Butler match. “You can get bored, and he's a player that wants to be part of the game ... his communication, I thought, was really concise and was excellent.”
Mroz’s only mistake of the season cost his team a penalty in the opening match against the University of Notre Dame. Yet the Hoosiers still won the match 3-1.
Now, against a strong Louisville offense, the transfers of Mroz and McHenry will need to continue their excellent communication with the returning Barger, Maher and Kinsella.
About the Cardinals
Yeagley and his squad will match up against a familiar face in former Indiana player and now-Louisville head coach John Michael Hayden. Hayden played in the midfield during his time in Bloomington from 2002 to 2005.
As a prolific player for the Hoosiers, Hayden was a part of the 2003 and 2004 national championship teams. After a professional career with Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo, Hayden started coaching in 2012. He made stints at Louisville, Lipscomb University and Xavier University as an assistant coach before taking over head coaching duties with the Cardinals before the 2019 campaign.
Louisville made the NCAA Tournament in four out of five seasons to start Hayden’s tenure but has only won one Atlantic Coast Conference game its last two seasons. However, Louisville began the 2026 season with three consecutive victories.
The Cardinals defeated IU Indianapolis to begin the year before taking down the University of Kentucky 3-2 in Lexington, Kentucky. Louisville then won 3-1 against Lipscomb before its matchup against Indiana on Monday.
The No. 14-ranked team in the ACC’s preseason coaches poll is headlined by junior midfielder Giacomo Zizza’s strong start to the season. He transferred from Lehigh University after earning first team All-Patriot League honors last season. Zizza scored four goals in Louisville’s opening two matches, including a 90th-minute winner over Kentucky.
Along with Zizza, three other Louisville players have scored one goal this season, including sophomore forward Andrés Escudero Martín, who netted a 56th-minute goal against Kentucky.
Escudero was a teammate of Mroz at Evansville but transferred away from the program in the offseason. After a strong freshman season — which saw him become the first player in Evansville program history named to TopDrawerSoccer's Freshman Best XI — Escudero will help lead a strong attack for the Cardinals against Indiana.
Monday’s matchup is set to kick off at 7 p.m. at Lynn Soccer Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky. The game can be streamed on the ACC Network.
“We've been there before, while maybe half the crowd is Indiana, which is awesome,” Yeagley said after Butler. “So, I look forward to it. I know the guys are excited.”
