Environmental journalist to speak\nEnvironmental journalist Mark Hertsgaard will speak on "How to Save the World: Real Solutions to the Environmental Crisis" at 12 p.m. Friday in Fine Arts Room 015.\nHertsgaard is an independent journalist, author and activist whose work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker. His most recent book was "Earth Odyssey: Around the World in Search of Our Environmental Future." \nHe will speak about his 6-year, 19-country journey around the world to assess the state of the world's environment and the complex cultural and social forces that complicate our ability to find easy solutions to our environmental challenges, and his proposal to meet these challenges. Hertsgaard will be available for a book signing and to meet with student environmental groups after his talk.\nFor more information, contact Dave Rollo at drollo@bio.indiana.edu or 855-8443. \nAlumni survey shows success\nResults from the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation's first alumni survey reported positive news for HPER graduates searching for jobs. \nOf 388 responses to the survey, which was sent to 1992, 1995 and 1998 graduates of applied health science, kinesiology and recreation and park administration, 84 percent obtained work within six months of beginning their job search, and 45 percent were employed the first month. Fifty-two percent of alumni who earned graduate degrees were employed within one month.\nThe survey also showed that the $30,000 to $40,000 salary range was the most common for those employed full time in a field related to their major. Twenty-eight percent of undergraduates and 42 percent of graduate students fell in that range. About 25 percent of alumni are earning more than $40,000 annually, and 20 percent of graduate student alumni earn $50,000 or more. \nFor more information on the alumni survey, contact HPER Associate Dean David Gallahue at 855-1561 or gallahue@indiana.edu.
