IU stymied by Charleston's starting pitcher in series opener

IU had no answer at the plate all game against College of Charleston’s starting pitcher Taylor Clarke Friday in Charleston’s 4-2 victory.

Clarke struck out a career high 11 batters in eight shutout innings. He allowed seven hits and did not walk a single Hoosier.

Junior Scott Effross took the loss for IU, allowing two earned runs in four innings pitched.

Charleston jumped out to an early lead in the first inning after a two RBI double from Carl Wise. The runners reached courtesy of a walk from Effross and a throwing error from shortstop Nick Ramos.

It was Ramos’ team leading fourth error of the season.

Charleston hit two solo home runs for it other two runs, one in the third inning off of Effross and the other in the sixth inning off of sophomore Kent Williams.

IU scored both of its runs in the ninth inning after Clarke was removed from the game. The two runs came from four singles. Senior Will Nolden and freshman Isiah Pasteur both had RBI singles.

IU next plays Saturday against Charleston at 3 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
