16 people killed in terrorist attack

BEERSHEBA, Israel -- Palestinian suicide bombers blew up two buses in this Israeli desert city Tuesday, killing 16 passengers and wounding more than 80 in the deadliest attack in nearly a year. The blasts ended a six-month lull in violence that Israel had attributed to its separation barrier, arrest sweeps and widespread network of informers. The buses exploded into flames just seconds apart and about 100 yards away from each other near a busy intersection in the center of Beersheba.

Justice Dept. asks to reverse terror conviction

WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department asked a judge Tuesday to throw out the convictions of a suspected terror cell in Detroit because of prosecutorial misconduct, reversing course in a case the Bush administration once hailed as a major victory in the war on terrorism. In a late-night filing, the department told U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen that it supports the Detroit defendants' request for a new trial and would no longer pursue terrorism charges against them.

NEW YORK -- The first Republican National Convention to be held in New York began with a little home hospitality and ended with a packed house Monday. "My New York" was the theme of the beginning of the morning session, as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former mayor Ed Koch addressed the crowd.

NEW YORK -- U.S. Secretary of Education and IU alumnus Rod Paige will address the Republican National Convention tonight, making the case for four more years of President Bush to the convention delegates as well as discussing the president's No Child Left Behind Act.

Sharon: All 21 Gaza settlements to be removed at same time

JERUSALEM -- Prime Minister Ariel Sharon wants all 21 Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip evacuated at the same time instead of in three stages, officials said Monday, reflecting a major shift in tactics in his pullout plan. Sharon's goal is to prevent drawn-out and violent confrontations between settlers and the security forces, as well as multiple confrontations in his Cabinet.

Daniels to visit convention floor, city events today NEW YORK - Indiana Republican gubernatorial candidate Mitch Daniels is expected to make an appearance at the Republican National Convention today. Daniels' press secretary Mark Lotter said the candidate will attend meetings with the Indiana delegates and supporters, attend various events and then will make his way to Madison Square Garden later in the afternoon. Daniels is running against Democratic incumbent Joe Kernan in November's election.

Al-Sadr calls for cease-fire

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Rebel Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called for his followers across Iraq to end fighting against U.S. and Iraqi forces and is planning to join the political process in the coming days, an al-Sadr aide said Monday. Iraqi oil exports came to a halt after a rash of insurgent attacks on the country's petroleum infrastructure, the country's main source of income, senior oil company officials said. Oil prices edged higher in advance of the opening of trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

NEW YORK -- Under the cover of hovering helicopters and in between the lines of New York's finest, hundreds of thousands of protesters marched the streets of Manhattan, voicing their dislike for President George W. Bush, the Republican party and the Republican National Convention.

Australian prime minister facing re-election after supporting Iraq war

CANBERRA, Australia -- Prime Minister John Howard will become the first of three allied leaders who launched the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq to face voters, having announced Sunday that Australians will go to the polls Oct. 9. The date comes ahead of the U.S. presidential ballot Nov. 2 and British elections early next year. Howard, whose conservative coalition comfortably won a third, three-year term in November 2001 -- in the aftermath of the 9/11 al Qaeda attacks in the United States -- declared Sunday that trust will be the dominant issue of the election campaign.

3 killed in fraternity house fire at University of Mississippi

OXFORD, Miss. -- Students at the University of Mississippi questioned the school's fire safety procedures as investigators returned to a charred fraternity house Saturday to find the cause of a blaze that killed three people. Twenty students and a house mother escaped the fire at the two-story, brick-and-wood frame Alpha Tau Omega house Friday.

Officials, rebels accept peace offer

NAJAF, Iraq -- Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, made a dramatic return to Najaf Thursday and swiftly won agreement from a rebel cleric and the government to end three weeks of fighting between his militia and U.S.-Iraqi forces. The renegade Muqtada al-Sadr accepted the proposal in a face-to-face meeting Thursday night with the 75-year-old al-Sistani, Iraq's most influential Shiite cleric. Hours afterward, the government also agreed to the deal.

Two firms chosen to build missile defense for commercial airplanes

WASHINGTON -- Teams led by BAE Systems and Northrup Grumman were chosen Wednesday to build and test prototypes for anti-missile systems to defend U.S. commercial planes against shoulder-fired rockets. The Homeland Security Department said the companies will each get $45 million over the next 18 months. It's the second phase of the agency's effort to determine whether affordable, effective anti-missile systems can be deployed on commercial planes.

Charges reduced for soldier accused in Abu Ghraib abuse

MANNHEIM, Germany -- A U.S. military policewoman accused in the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal had the charges against her reduced Wednesday as a set of pretrial hearings wrapped up at an American base in Germany. The decision by military prosecutors could significantly reduce jail time for Spc. Megan Ambuhl -- one of seven Army reservists charged with abuse of Iraqi prisoners -- if she is found guilty.

Paris marks 60 years of liberation with city anniversary celebration

PARIS -- Ceremonies that drew thousands of people into the streets culminated with a solemn tribute to the heroes of the liberation at Paris City Hall -- followed by a jubilant outdoor ball. The liberation "shook France and renewed hope in the world," said President Jacques Chirac in an address at City Hall, where he decorated veterans and Resistance members.

Russia investigates possibility of terrorism in plane crashes

BUCHALKI, Russia -- Russian emergency workers searched heaps of twisted metal and tall grass Wednesday for clues about what caused two airliners to plunge to earth within minutes of each other, killing all 89 people aboard. Officials said one jet sent a hijack distress signal. Flight recorders from both planes were found and taken to Moscow for investigation, ITAR-TASS, a Russian news agency, reported, indicating the question of what caused the twin disasters soon could be answered.

Pentagon blamed in prison scandal

WASHINGTON -- U.S. soldiers running the Abu Ghraib prison are mainly to blame for the inmate abuses there, but fault also lies with the Pentagon's most senior civilian and military officials, according to a report released Tuesday by an independent panel of civilian defense experts.

Rice says world must put a stop to Iran's nuclear ambitions

WASHINGTON -- With Iran stepping up its nuclear program, a top White House aide said Sunday the world finally is "worried and suspicious" over the Iranians' intentions and is determined not to let Tehran produce a nuclear weapon. National security adviser Condoleezza Rice also said the Bush administration sees a new international willingness to act against Iran's nuclear program. She credited the changed attitude to the Americans' insistence that Iran's effort put the world in peril.
