It was only a matter of time before Hollywood addressed the concept of sex scandals and the U.S. presidency -- or in the case of Dreamworks' new film "The Contender," the vice presidency.

Outgoing IUSA president recalls election night, offers advice

IU Student Association President Meredith Suffron, a senior, said she is watching this week's IUSA elections from the sidelines. She said she chose not to support one of the five executive tickets. Suffron said election days and nights are full of stress and intensity for the candidates, while the campus is bombarded with fliers, signs and campaigning candidates.

Tickets' platforms address campus issues

Primary goals of the House ticket are student involvement and administrative accountability, candidates said. The ticket consists of freshmen Dale Drizd for president, Jim Brueggemann for vice president for Congress, Heath Voegerl for vice president for administration and Adam Traylor for treasurer.

Covered with several fresh layers of paint, the bridges of Jordan Avenue are a cutthroat battleground for candidates for IU Student Association offices. The Supernova ticket had someone watch their bridge until 2 a.m. Monday morning, said sophomore Jeff Wuslich, Supernova candidate for vice president for administration. But when the person left, their advertisement was painted over by a rival ticket, he said. Signs of the IUSA elections -- including the bridges -- have been appearing all over campus in the last few days.

Hoosiers looking for sweep

There is no question men's basketball interim head coach Mike Davis has his heart set on postseason play, and time is running out to get there. There are four games left in the regular season, and if Davis wants to reach 19 wins, the Hoosiers must win three of them. But with No. 5 Michigan State, Wisconsin and intra-state rival Purdue left on the schedule, Davis said the Hoosiers are entering the toughest part of the season. The Spartans are first on the list. The Hoosiers (16-10, 7-5 Big Ten) will face Michigan State (20-3, 9-3) at 7 p.m. in the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich.

Victim's mother to speak

Judy Shepard, mother of the slain gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard, will speak about the prevention of hate crimes Wednesday in West Lafayette, and some IU students will make the trek to hear the speech. Shepard became a proponent of hate crime ordinances after her son's death in 1998. The event was re-publicized this year by MTV, with the movie "Anatomy of a Hate Crime -- the Matthew Shepard Story."

Little 500 practice begins

Serene rides through campus and the streets of Bloomington seemed distant memories for many first-year Little 500 riders as Rookie Week started Monday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. "I was riding next to a girl who wasn't very vocal, and she actually touched the girl's bike in front of her and almost fell," said sophomore Alpha Delta Pi rider Lauren Moore. "Everybody kind of stopped to miss her. I was scared because I didn't know what way she might fall." Riders bumping into each other is a part of the race. Moore said she has seen the scrapes and bruises on her teammates. Rookie Week is designed to limit serious injuries to riders.

City opposes housing complex

Graffiti covers the brick walls at the ST Semicon site, 415 N. College Ave. While the cracked windows have been boarded for more than a decade, not everyone has forgotten about the vacant building. Intergroup Realty Trust, a Florida-based developer, filed papers last week to build a nine-story student housing complex there. The complex has been in the works for some time, and Intergroup President Pat Nolan said everything is on schedule. The Bloomington Board of Zoning Appeals will hear the proposal March 15, and is expected to vote on it in mid-April.

Earnhardt will be sorely missed

When Dale Earnhardt slammed into the wall during the final lap of the Daytona 500, it wasn't the first time he had been in a serious accident. Notorious for his aggressive driving, Earnhardt had seen many of his risky maneuvers on the track pay off over the course of his 23-year Winston Cup career.

Pitchers seek stability

To say the Hoosiers are looking for a little more stability in their pitching staff after giving up a school-record 49 runs in three games last weekend against Furman would be an understatement. And the Hoosiers have one day off to try to find that stability before they face Indiana Wesleyan at 3 p.m. today at Sembower Field.

Mayor vetoes historic district

Plans to make the McDoel Gardens neighborhood a conservation district suffered a setback Monday. Mayor John Fernandez vetoed the city council ordinance, which would place restrictions on construction in the westside neighborhood just south of the Bloomington Hospital.

IUSA elections to start today

IU Student Association elections take place today and Wednesday with polling sites across campus. The five tickets running are House, Imagine, Miracle, ONE and Supernova. Each ticket has a president, vice president for Congress, vice president for administration and treasurer executive candidate. All the tickets also have candidates running for congressional seats, which represent housing areas and academic schools.

Hoosiers bounce back against Brown

A road trip to Indiana proved difficult for the Brown University Bears. Entering the Hoosier state 3-0, Brown leaves with a 3-3 record after suffering losses to Indiana State and Purdue over the weekend, and IU Monday afternoon.

Softball team opens season with 2 wins, 3 losses in tourney

Weeks of preparation left the Hoosiers itching to get their season started. When it began, they responded with a 5-2 victory against Virginia in the Triangle Classic at North Carolina State. But the young Hoosiers were unable to maintain their momentum, as they walked away from Raleigh with a 2-3 record.

Depression plays beautiful

'Monologues' moving, powerful

Laughter, tears, screaming, silence and moaning filled the Fine Arts Auditorium at 3 p.m. Sunday as 13 women from the IU and Bloomington communities presented "The Vagina Monologues" to a standing-room-only crowd. The audience, composed of people of all ages, genders and races, was united in appreciation of the show, which deals with a usually taboo topic -- the vagina. The crowd contributed as much to the production as the actresses themselves: their laughter, applause and response created a comfortable, accepting mood in which the performers could shine.
