Coach adjusts to new role on tennis team

There are many important parts to any team, from players to trainers and specifically, coaches. This was evident last year when newly-hired assistant coach Matt Pledger had to fill the shoes of IU coach Ken Hydinger, who was on administrative leave last season for medical reasons.

Vlahogeorge gets early start

While most students his age are thinking about senior pranks and which tux to wear to the prom, IU freshman quarterback Mike Vlahogeorge has his mind set on another topic -- football. Vlahogeorge is in a unique position because he opted to graduate high school early and enroll at IU in order to play with the spring football squad. Vlahogeorge comes into the IU program with serious credentials as the six-foot-three, 220-pound playcaller ranks No. 4 all-time in the Indiana state high school list with 10,757 career passing yards. Vlahogeorge acquired such numbers after a stellar senior season, passing for 3,347 yards and 44 touchdowns while averaging well over 300 yards per game.

'Divas' show another coronation for Simpson

NEW YORK --Even the folks at VH1 admit they didn't really consider Jessica Simpson diva material when they put together their annual "Divas" extravaganza last year. Rick Krim, a VH1 executive vice president, said she didn't seem to appeal to the targeted audience.

Bluegrass lives on

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- Hundreds of dedicated bluegrass music fans may have saved a music festival that was slated to end after this year. Last month, Executive Inn Rivermont officials said the third annual Bluegrass Returns to its Roots festival would be the last. But many of the 1,200-plus fans who filled the Showroom Lounge Friday and Saturday didn't want the music to stop.

Popular comic livens IU

Don't get me wrong, I think Dave Chappelle is a funny guy. A veteran of the comedy club circuit since the age of 15, he certainly knows how to make an audience laugh. A consistent viewer of the second season of Chappelle's widely popular Comedy Central program, "Chappelle's Show," I've laughed as hard as anybody at his parodies of Rick James, Prince, Gallagher and Lil' Jon. But as Chappelle said his final goodbye and thank you to the audience Sunday night at the IU Auditorium, I couldn't help but liken his performance to "Elimidate" or "The Fifth Wheel." There was an unhealthy amount of dirty sex talk combined with the feeling this kind of material is unoriginal and been done before.

When in Rome...

Smelly, chaotic, noisy, beautiful and charming are only a few of the words that can be used to describe Rome; the eternal city is a mixture of old and new world, Catholicism and pagan gods. The bustle that is common to this metropolis was only intensified by the weekend I chose to visit: Easter. After navigating my way to the hotel -- no small feat in the labyrinthine streets -- I set out to see what there is to be seen. As it turns out, in Rome that means the entire city.

Families mark Okla. bombing anniversary

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Children of Oklahoma City bombing victims -- hailed as "portraits of our survival" -- read victims' names Monday as survivors and relatives marked nine years since the devastating blast. The solemn observation at the Oklahoma City National Memorial began at 9:02 a.m., the minute the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building was destroyed by a fuel oil and fertilizer bomb April 19, 1995.

Ode to Little Five

"Little 500 is next week!" I exclaimed to a friend from back home, only to soon realize that: a. she was not excited in the slightest and b. she had no clue what Little 500 is. The fact that many good people in this country are completely unaware of Little Five is an atrocity; Little 500 should be a national holiday -- a nod to the advent of spring and physical activity.

Biotech graces Bloomington

The Indiana Daily Student reported Monday Cook Group Inc. is going to build a biotech facility in Bloomington that will create about 800 jobs within the community. We at the IDS welcome the Cook Group to the IU neighborhood. Not only will the factory produce new and better drugs for people around the world, it will improve the town by offering qualified people local jobs -- perhaps serving to slow down the brain drain. Also, the fact this company was originally started in Bloomington from the apartment of its founders is pleasantly ironic.

Life sciences create new jobs

Gov. Joe Kernan announced this month that Indiana's life sciences industry will be growing by about 400 new jobs. Warsaw, Ind., will soon be a part of the creation of more life sciences jobs for Hoosiers, because of the decision of Zimmer Holdings, Inc., to grow there.

Man jumps from Ballantine

A man jumped off the eighth floor of Ballantine Hall Monday around 11:40 a.m. IU Police Department Lt. Jerry Minger said the man is still alive. Minger said, although he could not confirm, that the man is a student, though he may not be enlisted in classes this semester. An IUPD Officer at the scene said he thought the man broke a glass window with a chair and jumped off, landing on the awning above the front entrance to the building.

The following activity was reported by the IU Police Department: April 9 • Non-student John Hardin, 51, resident of North Summit Avenue, was arrested on charges of dealing crack cocaine and maintaining a common nuisance. The subject was transported to the Monroe County Jail.

IU offering counseling for students

Counseling services are available on campus for students struggling to deal with the suicide attempt at Ballantine Hall Monday. Nancy Buckles, director of Counseling and Psychological Services in the IU Health Center said the facility on the fourth floor offers walk-in counseling for students who feel they cannot wait for a scheduled appointment.

Remembering a coaching legend

Friends, family and swimmers alike gathered Sunday to celebrate and commemorate the life of former IU swimming coach James "Doc" Counsilman, who passed away Jan. 4 at the age of 83. The Whittenberger Auditorium was filled to the brim with anyone and everyone whose life was touched by Counsilman, including more than 20 Olympic swimmers. Counsilman coached swimming at IU for more than 30 years and led the team to 23 conference titles, including 20 consecutive conference championships from 1961 to 1980. He also coached two of the most successful U.S. Olympic teams in history in the 1964 and 1976 squads. The 1976 team won 12 of 13 possible gold medals, and Counsilman led swimmers to set world records in every single event. But his greatest contribution came in the form of a book titled "The Science of Swimming," master of ceremonies and former coach Cecil Colwin said.
