Reality not what it used to be

As I slowly approach adulthood, I'm trying to get a handle on what this so-called "real world" is actually like. I'm trying to ascertain what it will be like to live in this new and foreign world.

I consider myself a pretty mild-mannered person. I might cuss someone out if they cut me off in traffic, but that's about the extent of my anger. But Mexico has just pissed me off. Don't get me wrong, I love Mexico, sometimes more than here, especially the drinking age. But I digress.

Around The Game

The Oct. 2 IU-Michigan football game at Memorial Stadium has been set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. on ABC. The game will be shown regionally. Saturday, IU plays Michigan State at home in a game which will be broadcast on ESPN Plus Local but will not be shown live. It will be shown in tape delay starting at 8 p.m. on WTTV Channel 4. The game will be shown live on ESPN GamePlan.

Bowling for Ballantine

Last May I found myself walking through white walls of emptiness buried under eight floors of horrific modern architecture; I was in Ballantine Hall. Constructed in 1959, IU's largest academic building was supposed to be a modern marvel, the epicenter of the Bloomington campus. Instead, Ballantine has come to embody the burgeoning cultural crisis currently facing IU.

There's no crying in football

That's it. I'm done. This columnist needs to go on the injured reserve list. This past weekend I experienced the worst pain known to man. No, it wasn't a million paper cuts on my face nor was it being chewed apart limb by limb at the expense of Jaws himself. I was rushed to the emergency room of the Bloomington Hospital twice with a kidney stone.

For the seventh straight year, the IU men's and women's diving coach Jeff Huber has received the U.S. Diving's National Coach of the Year award. "Winning this award never gets old," Huber said in a statement.

Foster Quad rocks the vote

In only 46 days, U.S. citizens 18-years-old and older across the country will flock to local voting polls and exercise their rights as Americans to vote in the fall election. Until Nov. 2, student organizations across IU's campus are doing whatever it takes to get students educated and involved in the elections.

IUSTV to begin 24-hour casts

IU Student Television will air 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week on campus television starting Wednesday. "Basically, we will be taking over the programming on campus TV channel 2," said Gauri Sharma, marketing coordinator for the channel. IUSTV is a completely student-run organization. Last semester, more than 120 student volunteers produced, reported, marketed and managed the television station.

Tibetan activist receives praise for accomplishments

The Tibetan Cultural Center's International Mongolian Festival kicked off Friday with a ceremony in honor of the man who made it all possible. Professor Thubten Jigme Norbu, founder of the TCC, received an enconium, the highest award a Bloomington mayor can give, for his lifetime of service to the Bloomington community.

Wildcats claw Hoosiers 51-32

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Defense was the hot topic after the Hoosiers' upset victory over the University of Oregon last weekend. It will be issue No. 1 this week for IU after the University of Kentucky ran and threw all over the Hoosier defense in its 51-32 victory. The win continued Kentucky's dominance in the series in recent years -- winning nine of the last 10 and three in a row and snapping IU's two-game winning streak in the process.

IU takes 3rd-straight Intercollegiate title IU took home its third straight Indiana Intercollegiates title Friday evening at Purdue University. The championship has become an IU staple in recent years. The Hoosiers took five of the top seven places in dominating the 8,000-meter course. Indiana State University was the closest competition, finishing 29 points behind IU's winning 20 point tally.

Colts knock off Titans in AFC South battle; Bears surprise Packers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Peyton Manning threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns to win the first game between the NFL's defending co-MVP quarterbacks, leading Indianapolis to a 31-17 victory Sunday over Tennessee. Steve McNair was 25-of-39 for 273 yards and ran for a touchdown, but was intercepted in the end zone, sacked three times and had his final drive ended when he was sacked and fumbled in the last minute.

IU opens Big Ten season with two home wins

IU women's soccer coach Mick Lyon said last week his team had to have two wins this weekend and excuses wouldn't be tolerated. It wasn't pretty, but his Hoosier team did just that. IU kicked off its 2004 Big Ten season with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota Friday and a 1-0 win against Iowa Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Parking operations cautions cyclists

Hoosiers struggle in weekend tourney

Coming off an exciting five-set win against IP-Fort Wayne Tuesday, the IU women's volleyball team hosted the TIS Bookstore Invitational this weekend. The Hoosiers were unable to get on track all weekend, losing all three matches they played. IU coach Katie Weismiller was quick to point out what went wrong for the Hoosiers this weekend.

A football power brewing?

Somewhere in the middle of Kentucky lies a city called Lexington. Lexington is a proud city whose passion for collegiate athletics runs deep. Having already been to the University of Kentucky to see the IU-Duke basketball game a few years ago, I thought I knew what to expect upon arrival in Lexington. Also considering the fact that Lexington, similarly to Bloomington, is first and foremost, a basketball town, I did not expect to see much enthusiasm for the Wildcat football team. I was dead wrong.
