National advice columnist visits IU

Not many people would pay attention to a 5-foot-5, self proclaimed big-eared man with two days of stubble on his face walking through the Indiana Memorial Union Tuesday night. But if those people took a closer look, they would have realized they had just walked past nationally syndicated columnist Harlan Cohen, more famously known as the "Help Me, Harlan" guy.

Men's volleyball falls to Dayton in Classic

The fifth annual Hoosier Fall Classic preseason tournament gave volleyball teams from the Midwest the chance to shake out the rust accumulated during the offseason. Twenty-four teams from the Midwest came to Bloomington Saturday looking for their first tournament victory of the year.

IU gears up for championship run

Saturday night the IU ice hockey club held its annual Red versus White intersquad scrimmage at Frank Southern Ice Arena. Americans, Australians excel at World Championships

INDIANAPOLIS -- For the first time in the event's history, the FINA World Swimming Championships were held on American soil, boasting a lineup of the world's top swimmers, many fresh off Olympic performances. IU has record-setting day in repeat win at Xavier

The IU men's golf team's first tournament victory of the season came in record-setting fashion. The Hoosiers shot 834 at the Oasis Club in Loveland, Ohio, setting a new school record for 36 holes and successfully defending last year's first-place finish at the Xavier Invitational. Senior Jeff Overton, who claimed four first-place finishes last fall, repeated as the medalist at Xavier for his first win of the fall campaign.

Yankees outscore Red Sox 10-7

NEW YORK - Mariano Rivera showed up just in time to save the New York Yankees. Shortly after jetting back from a funeral for relatives in Panama, baseball's greatest closer stopped the surging Boston Red Sox, who had cut an eight-run deficit to one. Rivera got Kevin Millar to pop out to strand the tying run at third base in the eighth inning, then finished out a thrilling 10-7 win for the Yankees in Tuesday night's opener of the AL championship series.

Foreign relations 101

It looks like the universities in Indiana are getting more and more bland. This year, for the first time ever, IU's foreign student enrollment dropped. Foreign student enrollment at Purdue fell this year for the first time in more than 30 years. At IU, we value diversity, right? We value it because it properly prepares students for the real world, which is diverse. We value it because a healthy community should be diverse. We all agree that a diverse campus is a happy campus.

Indigo Girls to play Buskirk-Chumley

All 600 seats of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater will be full tonight when Amy Ray and Emily Sailers, otherwise known as the Indigo Girls, take the stage. The indie duo will embrace its Bloomington fans with an acoustic show. Over the past two decades, the Indigo Girls have produced eight studio albums and played thousands of shows. The duo has operated within the music industry without the use of marketing gurus or corporate tie-ins.

Oktoberfest, the German way

Award-winning play opens

His latest script, "The New Jersey Book of the Deadk" explores the pervasive nature of technology and how it can be used to infringe on our freedoms as individuals. At least that's the issue he addresses first in his Reva Shiner Playwriting Award-winning play at the Bloomington Playwrights Project.
