Bodies of 18 executed Iraqis discovered in field

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The bodies of 18 young Iraqi Shiites killed last month while seeking work at a U.S. base have been found in a field near Mosul, police said Thursday, as the Iraqi government extended a state of emergency for a month because of violence ahead of landmark elections.

CARSON, Calif. -- Jay Nolly hasn't missed a single minute of a single game since October 2002. But in all that time, which encompassed a national championship, All-Big Ten selections and 30 shutouts, Nolly saved his best for last. With IU leading 3-2 on penalty kicks against the University of California-Santa Barbara and the national championship on the line, the senior goalkeeper dove to his left, blocking the final kick and sent IU to its second straight national championship.

One more name can be crossed off the list for potential replacements of former IU football coach Gerry DiNardo. Late Sunday evening, Dick Neuheisel, father of former Washington coach Rick, said his son has not been contacted by IU athletic director Rick Greenspan or the athletic department.

O'Rourke caps off career in grand fashion

CARSON, Calif. -- The National Soccer Coaches Association of America named IU senior midfielder Danny O'Rourke one of three finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy. The MAC Hermann Trophy is college soccer's equivalent to college football's Heisman Trophy.

Police raid sorority function at Axis

Indiana State Excise Police raided Axis Nightclub Wednesday night, netting 25 people on charges of minors loitering, which refers to being in a bar while underage. They also charged 18 of those 25 people with minor consumption. The Excise Police arrived at Axis at 11:45 p.m., after hearing complaints of underage drinking going on Wednesday nights, according to Excise Police reports.

Brehm named provost finalist

Former IU-Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm is one of the finalists for the provost position at the University of Connecticut, according to an article in The Hartford Courant.

IU considers early athlete registration

Athletes seem to be the top priority -- at least in terms of scheduling. After years of student-athletes experiencing trouble finding a way to put a schedule together that included time for class, games and practice, the Bloomington Faculty Council approved a temporary plan Tuesday that would allow student-athletes to register for classes before the rest of the undergraduate students at IU.

Hoosiers rebound with sweep of East Coast foes

After a tough loss Monday night to Indiana State University 66-59, the Hoosiers hit the road this weekend to take on a pair of foes from the American East Conference -- the University of Maine and Boston University. IU (5-3) was victorious in both games 62-60 against Boston and 67-59 against Maine.

Freshmen get rare minutes in loss to heated rivals UK

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- IU coach Mike Davis had to. He had no choice but to play freshman and Fort Wayne native James Hardy. "James Hardy -- I had to play him," Davis said. "You just kind of wait for the game where you can put him in, but I can't wait for Oral Roberts or Furman. I mean at some point he has to experience (game situations).

Leinart becomes USC's sixth Heisman winner

NEW YORK -- Matt Leinart replaced a Heisman Trophy winner and became one himself. The Southern California quarterback won college football's most prestigious individual award Saturday night, beating out Oklahoma teammates Adrian Peterson and Jason White, last year's winner.
