Patriotic honor

·

Call me a nerd if you will, but I’ve recently been leafing through Alexis de Tocqueville’s “Democracy in America,” in which the French political thinker observes that, in America, morals count for a lot, while honor counts for relatively little.

Condom knowledge

·

Last week the nonpartisan research firm Mathematica released the findings of a nine-year scientific study of abstinence-only sex education programs under Congressional order.. The findings? The programs, in most cases, don’t work (surprise, surprise). According to the study of more than 2,000 students, those enrolled in the courses were equally as likely as their counterparts to have had sex, and the age at which intercourse first occurred was identical among the groups.

Thoughts from Sin City

·

LAS VEGAS – Everyone should experience a desert sunrise, especially when the view includes hookers fighting over bread, and soulless men enticing passers-by with offers of delivering loose women. It may only be 6 a.m., but it’s never too early to begin a day of despair and sleaze, especially in a city built on preposterous human ambitions.

Health-center horrors

·

This weekend I had the sickies. As I stared down my throat in the bathroom like my parents used to do, I was struck by two equally perturbing questions. First, what the hell am I supposed to be looking for? Second, does this mean I’ll have to go to the IU Health Center?

Up and down the Hill

·

Last week, 9th District Rep. Baron Hill visited campus to address School of Public and Environmental Affairs students on the Iraq war. He defended the standard Democratic stance that the soldiers are doing a fine job but that policymakers have bungled everything.

Stress and self-esteem

·

Don’t underestimate the power of self-esteem. Having low self-esteem is one of the primary reasons that many people enter therapy. Throughout the course of therapy, they learn to like who they are and appreciate their uniqueness. Stress becomes much easier to overcome. High self-esteem enhances the quality of life and makes us happy people. Self-esteem is appreciating who you are and what you have instead of being miserable about what you do not have. It is the power of positive thinking and comes from liking who you are, including your flaws. When you believe in yourself, you have the strength to make things better.

‘Nine, the Musical’ not quite a perfect 10

·

The provocative and unusual production “Nine” opened Friday night at the Ruth N. Halls Theatre. A mixed bag of stupendous and so-so performances, “Nine” fell short of my expectations but still delivered an engaging and entertaining show.

Racist remark angers lawmakers

·

Indiana’s secretary of state asked forgiveness Monday for evoking images of slavery in describing black voting trends during a Republican event in southern Indiana last week. During a Thursday speech at the Daviess County annual Lincoln Day Dinner, Republican Secretary of State Todd Rokita said 90 percent of blacks vote Democrat and questioned why.

Shake like a feminist

·

Get low. In fall of 2003 Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz hit it big with a track by that name. If you don’t recall, maybe these lyrics will refresh your memory: “to the window, to the wall, to the sweat drip down my balls, to all these bitches crawl.” The songs lyrics are all demanding of females, probably in a nightclub sort of scenario, in which sex at the end of the night is hoped for and presumed – by both men and women. Still, the words are aggressive towards women and express little thought for what she might find enjoyable. Surely I could make these statements about any number of popular songs – rap and other genres – by male songwriters. If a song isn’t explicitly sexually demanding of a woman, it is describing her lips or her legs or the way her body looks when she’s grindin’ on the dance flo’.

Around the world

·

Airlines canceled 300 flights Sunday as a hard-blowing nor’easter gathered strength along the East Coast and threatened to deliver some of the worst shore flooding in 14 years. The storm, already blamed for five deaths on the Plains, also flooded people out of their homes in the middle of the night in West Virginia.
