Hoosiers to face Pacific, UC-Berkeley

The IU field hockey team opens a promising season this weekend with a trip to Berkeley, Calif., to face the University of the Pacific on Saturday and the University of California-Berkeley on Sunday. Last season, the Hoosiers, led by senior All-Americans Lydia Schrott and Morgan Miller, fell just short of an NCAA tournament bid. This year, with Schrott and Miller having graduated, IU will look to a new group of seniors to lead it into the postseason. The Hoosiers have six seniors returning and three in particular – forward Kate O’Connell, midfielder Meredith Brown and goalkeeper Haley Exner – have taken an early leadership role with the team during the preseason.

People talk about the glory days of IU football when Antwaan Randle El played, failing to realize the Hoosiers averaged four wins a year with him under center.

NORMAL, Ill. – The body of a 35-year-old male Illinois State University graduate was discovered on the third floor of the ISU Science Laboratory Building Wednesday morning, said McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling.

Mother campaigns for sexual assault awareness outside of T.I.S.

In April 2006, a female IU student was raped in McNutt Quad. Since Wednesday, Eva Feldman, the mother of the rape victim, has been standing outside of TIS Bookstore on Third Street with one hope: To promote sexual assault awareness so these incidents will become less frequent.

Presidential hopefuls to speak in Indianapolis

Republican presidential hopefuls Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney will be in Indianapolis this weekend for the Midwest Republican Leadership Conference. Huckabee will speak at 10 a.m. Friday at the Westin Indianapolis Hotel. Romney is scheduled for a “Hoosier Hospitality Barbecue” at 5:40 p.m. Friday in the Economaki Room of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Bloomington Police Department reports

The Bloomington Police Department arrested an unregistered sex offender Wednesday night. BPD Det. Jarred Burns spotted James Goins, 43, at approximately 7:55 p.m. riding a bike near Walnut and Allen streets, BPD Sgt. Jeff Canada said, reading from a police report. Goins was previously arrested for engaging in sexual misconduct with a minor, Canada said. During a search, officers found marijuana on him. Goins was transported to the Monroe County Jail.
