The lure of a debtless post-graduate life and the pride of serving Indiana convince dozens of IU students to join the National Guard. As the slogan went: “One weekend a month, two weeks a year.” But as combat missions in Iraq continue, a frat-boy medic, a wannabe tattoo artist, and a Jesus-loving piano player are among the 75 students now anticipating their desert deployment – with no guarantee of coming home.

A bikini wax, lap dances, and Pizza Express are just a few of the things Bloomington residents purchase. For one week, we challenged a SRSC personal trainer, sorority sister, Yogi’s bartender, IU campus bus driver, and the deputy mayor of Bloomington to record everything they bought, where they bought it, and how much it cost. Some of the results were downright ridiculous.

IU alumnus Joshua Bell and acclaimed pianist Jeremy Denk performed together Sunday at the Musical Arts Center in a free, completely full show. For those who were unable to get tickets, the Jacobs School of Music streamed a live feed of the performance on its Web site. A native of Bloomington, Bell will join the IU Jacobs School of Music as a senior lecturer in the String Department.

Mexican restaurant leaves Kirkwood after 15 years

IU students and locals will no longer be able to eat burritos as big as their heads in Bloomington. La Bamba, a Mexican restaurant located at 520 E. Kirkwood Ave., officially closed its doors on Feb. 4, said Jean Shaffer, a representative from the human resources office at the La Bamba chain’s headquarters in Champaign, Ill.
