I prefer to be referred to as vertically challenged, thank you very much. It’s something I’ve dealt with all of my life. I realized my shortness at a young age when I discovered I couldn’t reach the top cabinet where my mom hid the cookies. It was devastating.

Getting oriented

Overwhelmed freshmen and their bewildered parents are aimlessly wandering this campus like lost sheep and, fittingly, attending meetings in mass herds. Watching this sad display of behavior makes me the opposite of nostalgic for when I was in their shoes. If there’s one piece of advice I could give to reassure these nervous mobs that they aren’t making a horrible mistake, it would be this: Your experience at orientation is no indication of what your college experience will be like.

Psychedelic bands jam at Bear’s Place

Psychedelic music is a beast with many heads, a fact made clear by the varied acts who played June 18 at Bear’s Place. Making one last tour stop in Bloomington before heading to psych-heaven festival Terrastock, all of the acts shared a penchant for both psychedelic and folk music.

Artists sell works on courthouse square

Close to 10,000 art enthusiasts walked the streets of downtown Bloomington on Saturday during the 28th annual Arts Fair on the Square. The fair, which took place outside the Monroe County Courthouse from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., offered space for 62 different artists to display and sell art.

Kids raise money for flood victims on Friday

Although it was only 25 cents for a cup of lemonade, local children raised $92.25 in four hours to help local flood victims. But the lemonade stand run by children in the Makemson family is just one example of their charity work.

Hoosier Hills Food Bank initiates new donation program

With the economy in its current dire state and the price of food and fuel rising, many families are running out of funds to support themselves and are in need of any type of assistance, especially food. For this reason, Hoosier Hills Food Bank has begun a new mobile pantry distribution program in hopes of providing some relief to families in need in and around Lawrence County. According to the press release, the program is made possible through a grant from Charity Project Entertainment Fund’s “Idol Gives Back” campaign and America’s Second Harvest.

Looking back on Hep's legacy

A year ago today the IU football program lost its leader, the coaching ranks lost a respected colleague and those who were fortunate to have known former coach Terry Hoeppner lost a friend. Hoeppner died of complications from a brain tumor only months before the start of the 2007-08 season, forcing the IU players and coaching staff to come together and deal with the loss in the midst of preparations for the new year. “We went into last season with a real sense of purpose,” IU coach Bill Lynch said. “We had a goal in mind and we were united in that goal. And that was to get to a bowl game.”

State accepts IU’s offer to house flood victims

IU’s offer to house Hoosier families affected by recent flooding has been accepted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority, said Kirk White, IU director of community relations.
